Three Blunt Questions That Make Business Massive Profits

Hi, today I had two meeting that showed me how urgent this post is..so I am writing it you here today.   I want to highlight a MASSIVE issue that I see in business, both online and offline, an issue that once resolved can catapult your business skyward when applied well.

If I were to ask you “what’s your over-all business plan”? what would you say?

It will be one of three things:

1. Look at me blankly

2. Fumble your way to some kind of answer

3. Answer me exactly and fully

So what is your answer..because unless your answer is number 3, my friend you have a problem.

The BIG Problem

Why? because your business is like a ship, drifting around, going nowhere fast and being moved by something other than yourself.  At best it will avoid too many problems for a while but in time…lost and drifting, it will  eventually head toward the rocks that will end its days.

Whether you like it or not, that day will  come by your own hand, ending the business because it has failed to make money or forced by others who simply stop buying from you.

These are hard, cold and true facts that I make no apology in pointing out to you. If my 20 years of experience tells me anything…it is that a lack of vision, planning and strategic marketing is an epidemic in business and I do you no favours by not making you think about it..even for a while.

The truth is,the sooner you understand that your business needs you to create the direction, focus and purpose, the sooner you will take control and create your own future with your concious choices.  The sooner you accept your true mission, to be an entrepreneur, the better you and your business will fare.

I meet business owners every day, like today, offline and online who have simply not taken charge of their business and fail to make the obvious connection between a lack of a well though out plan and their struggle to get and keep clients.. although I understand it, I am still amazed by it.  It is like those who are over weight refusing to make the conscious connection between what they eat and their body…  I know about that one too..it used to be me.

Business is really as clear as gravity.. a well thought out, planned and executed business will have more chance of working than a poorly thought through, badly planned and poorly executed one…simple.

Would you try to build a building without a plan or training as a builder or architect? Of course not, so why are you trying to do something very hard, like build a business, without a plan or proper training?

What is YOUR Answer?  Be Honest…

So what would you say to those 3 questions? If you are in camp 3, congratulations, all you need to do now is make sure you have a strategic and well thought out plan…many don’t and that is another problem we must tackle, but not today.

If you are in group 1 or 2 then read these 7 tips to success in creating the RIGHT plan for you..

1. Start with the end in mind..always work back from the end..not the other way round!

2. Go into business using your strengths and NOT your weaknesses..only do things you are good at.

3. Do market research.

4. Remember, your business is NOT you, your business is your business, you are you so separate yourself from the business.

5. Accept your role…to make the business work and to give the business what it needs to grow, that is your role, as a provider for your business to grow.

6. Get mentored and follow those who are already successful. Too many business owners try to do it on their own…NOTHING ever worked by trying to something new based on inexperience or a lack of training.

7. Create 5 year, 3 year,2 year,1 year, 6 month and monthly goals that you stick to.

8. BONUS secret to success: make a good plan…stick to the good plan unless a better one come along.

9. Bonus secret: STOP making excuses for the struggles.  Push yourself to be the best
business owner you can, live on the edge of your confort zone and be the person you really are inside, beyond the fear and above the confusion.

What NEXT?

At this point may feel a little uncomfortable that you have not made the plan you should but I can promise you that one year from today, having taken notice of my 14 years online and 20 business experience,you will far better off than you are right now.

So tomorrow take 30 minutes out to do something that is incredibly valuable and unusual in business..take 30 minutes out to THINK about your business, where is it and what you can do next…thinking is something that 97% of business owners do not do but you can start and I promise you the benefits will come quickly.

Running a business is hard and challenging yet most try to do without the right plan or training in the execution of that plan…do NOT BE ONE OF THEM: dare to be different.

How to Not Be a Commodity in Your Business

Hi and welcome to this post which was sparked from a discussion about pricing in business with a large client (not them personally) who I was working with.

Quick Note: But before I start I wanted to respond to some feedback I got recently about the length of these articles on this site being too long…so

I will start by noting, as others have, that this post and most others are not the short type that you may see on other websites and there is a reason for that…business is complicated and hard and I am not going to pretend otherwise….so what I hope you get with me is a well thought out article that makes sense because it has the information YOU need to know because this site is for you not me and I want make sure that you get whole picture before you make a bad decision in your business…

So let’s get started…

Over the course of creating an improved and more effective business model for this business we began by focusing on improved marketing and pricing.  It became obvious pretty soon that they were not charging enough in their business to do what they wanted to over the next 5 years.   With designs on increased profits through increased sales it became obvious they they had marketed themselves into a rut…a hole that they had not come out of for the last 5 years.

It was obvious that even if they made more sales, their prices were so cheap it would make little real difference to their business! A common issue..

The 3 Ways To Make Money

Now as you know, there are only 3 ways to make more money1: get more customers 2: increase the price of the product or 3: make more from existing client…we all have the same choices to make in how we figure these out for ourselves and I guarantee that with some introspection you will able to opportunities in each of those areas to do better than you are.

In the case of this client it was obvious that their marketing was so poor they had been reduced to fighting for new customers on PRICE alone and when you do that you have turned your business into a commodity and you are in deep trouble, unless you happen to be Amazon!

Why? because when you want more customers and you are a commodity, you can compete in one area only, which is to reduce your price again and again:  in this case. this strategy would had led them into bankruptcy so was not a popular option.

Stay with me here……So What is a Commodity I Hear You Ask?

Here is the definition that is VERY important to your business success, maybe even its survival.

Commodity: “It is used to describe a class of goods for which there is demand, but which is supplied without qualitative differentiation across a market”

Notice the highlighted area, that is the important bit…a product or service that is provided without qualitative differentiation… which means in plain English…the product is the same as all the rest!  and when everything is the same…you have to sell on price alone.

This why, when you fail to use marketing effectively you will ALWAYS become a commodity at some point..always and that will always fail.

So what is the answer?  What did we do?

I changed 3 things:

1. Their mindset about their business

2. Their business model

3. Their marketing plan

by doing these..they are now well on the way to their goals..this stuff works folks..

So below is some advice for you which I hope makes sense to you? Let me know it is doesn’t!

Here are 7 Ways To NOT Be a Commodity

1. Bring your personality into your marketing. This removes the focus on price and moves onto you, so you had better be up for it!

2. Have scales of pricing dependent of different offers. Have at least 3 ranges of pricing in your business.

3. Offer a high priced product or service. Even if you do not think someone will buy it, you are still showing that you offer a top range.

4. Come up with a new range for your present customers that is more expensive. Survey your customers to see what other services they would like from you.

5. No matter what service or product you provide, write online and create some kind of newsletter to engage with your prospects.

6. Create packages. We all love to buy packages of things so create different options of your services or products that you could package up into a unique way.

7. Over-deliver on your promises.  This is THE best way to NOT be a commodity.

So that is 7 ways that you can use to make sure that you do not fall into the price war trap.

Remember, people buy people as well as solutions so your opportinity is to get your peronsality into your business and over-deliver..that way you can choose what you charge with confidence.

Remember: you deserve to be abundant in time and money..if you are in a price war you will never acheive you goals so take this as the kick you needed to raise your game and get that business where you want to be.

In a year from now, if you do not remove yourself from being any kind of commosity business, you will be in more or less the same please as you are now…if you like where you are cool, if not..you will be kicking yourself that you did not make a start today…

More Chance of Rounding Up a Herd of Cats!

Please read This Post Carefully – I Can Make My Message To You No Easier To Understand Than This..

I have been working online in my own online business for 14 years and been a Strategic Marketing Consultant for other businesses for two years now and I am still amazed at the lack of movement I am seeing by the local business community in the approach they take to using technology.

The fact is though, in one sense it is not your/their fault, there are so many rip off companies offering the world,charging the world and giving back so little to their clients I am not surprised local businesses are tending to be left behind to such a degree.

What does my experience clearly tell me? That business owners are confused, frustrated and a little lost when it comes to technology and using it..i.e the internet and social media.  But because they are clever, hard working people they also KNOW they have to do something about this HUGE HOLE in their business…they have just not known what to do,where to go and who to trust,

But this confusion, frustration simply cannot continue forever..as BLOCKBUSTER found out to their cost and you, the reader will find out to your cost, unless you do something to get this moving for yourself, you are doing a Blockbuster!

As you know, Blockbuster was once a thriving business, ahead of the times and filling our need to be entertained in our own homes..now it is doomed and broken because they did not make the effort to move with the right technology.  Once we were able to rent movies on your TV, why would anyone bother to go out an get one?  They just did not think about it or do something quick enough!  So they failed..

Now you may think that is type of business lesson does not apply to your business but I can promise you it does….whatever business you are in you MUST make the effort to look for ways to get your business in line with technology or you will fail..maybe not today or in the next week, but one day you will..and that is a fact.

The TRUTH: you have more of a chance of rounding up a herd of cats into a pen with a sheepdog and whistle than succeeding in business without getting involved in the right technology…

I personally know,and my experience tells me that most online marketing companies local businesses off and are worse than useless.  That is not to say all are, but most are: this does not go down well with alot of those people but it tells my prospects what I know to be true.

Today I’d like to tell you more about how to get clients for your business..in the first post we laid the groundwork for this discussion by showing you sales funnel. I cannot stress enough, if you do not have a planned and tested sales funnel worked out, you are failing already!

The bottom line is this area, when you are looking at how to get clients for your business, the ATTRACT area is the where 87% fail before they start.  In my internet marketing membership club, this is the main area where we focus our attention before we create a website, product or service because this area demands the ‘research’: something 90% of coaches do not do!  No wonder they struggle!

So how do you attract the right clients that want what you are offering and are willing to pay for it?   THAT is the big question….

If you want to know how to get clients into your business you must know 7 things about them and you before you start:

1. Where they are…  where do they hang out, how can you access them?

2. What BIG problem they MUST solve…it has to be a KNOWN problem for them or one that you can highlight as an issue.

3. How much is it ‘worth’ to solve it…with so much free content why would someone pay for your help?  Check what others are selling and for how much.

4. How to communicate with them on their level, in their language.  It is essential that you have experience/expertise in the area you are looking at.

5. How to become the expert in ‘their eyes’ – why are you qualified to do this, how can you PROVE it and how?  Why should they listen to you…just because you think they should?  that’s NOT enough.

6. You must know exactly what they think they need to solve the problem – the issue is in THEIR HEAD and so you must KNOW what they are thinking..tricky..but we will discuss at another point.

7. How to fulfill their need and make money..the biggest challenge of them all..how do you think you are going to convince them to give YOU their hard earned money rather than spend it on someone or something else?

OK, before we go any further, I want to set the record straight in this area, the ONLY way that you will succeed in attracting the right client, is if you do your research and homework for your business.

Remember - how to get clients for your business has nothing to do with the internet, networking or qualifications, it has everything to do with marketing research and understanding why people buy!

Although the details of the funnel will be different, in terms how how you achieve this, the what is always the same.

The key to success is to find out what you are good and and enjoy.  If you want to know how to get clients for your business…. then create a sales funnel that fits around that.  If you are not good at something, obviously you can practice and model others success but it is easier to do what you are naturally good at.

As you can see there are 5 keys areas that you must master, without which you will never grow your business.  It is sad but true, not being aware of, creating or mastering the sales funnel with finish your business before you even start!  So pay attention….if you want success.

“How to get clients for your business”  that is the BIG question…the bottom line is that every business on the planet is in the same boat, some do better than others only because they master the sales funnel, that is how to get clients for your business.

1. How to get clients for your business – Attract: you must find ways to attract leads into your business…do that around your strengths at first then explore other ways. If you are good at speaking, give talks, if you are good at writing, write a blog..

The key issues here is to make sure that when you are working out how to get more clients you do as little as possible, as effectively as possible and that means working from a position of strength..see later posts coming.

2. How to get clients for your business-Engage:  the obvious thing to do here is social media, enough to engage with your prospects as they move through the sales funnel.  There are obviously easier ways to do than others, automation is the key to effective time management here..more of that soon…

3. How to get more clients for your business – Nurture: just like any relationship, you must nurture the relationship with your prospects.  Writing great blog posts, giving away advice are all ways you can nurture these relationships.   The key is to be strategic in how you do it, so that you keep the prospect interested in the next stage of the process.  Do not give away all your secrets, there will be nothing left for them to buy!

There are 7 essential areas that must be covered here, which we will do in another post.

4. How to get clients for your business – Sell: the best description of how to sell something is actually about marketing.  That good marketing “makes the the sales inevitable” and that is best way to think about it.  What can you do, so well that makes selling superfluous?  the answer is strategic marketing.

The truth is, success is business may be about being good at something, but the 90% of the time it is NOT the best product, service or business that makes the most money…it is the business that markets itself the best..think about that today and tune in for the next posts.

5. How to get clients for your business – Deliver: there are two ways to think about this word when looking at how to get clients for your business.

1. Make sure that your product or service can be delivered to your customer easily. We live in world where people do NOT want to make the effort…we do not have to walk to get water or get a ton of information free online..so make sure that the delivery of your service is EASY for the person to access.

2. One of the best ways to get clients for your business is to make sure that the service does what it says it will…it delivers.  It also must deliver BETTER that others in your market..or at least appear to!

Just think about it, in a competitive world with thousands of other coaches, products and services, ONLY marketing will make the difference if you want to reach a bigger audience to share your message: it is by far the area that you have the most leverage on, the area that will separate you from the competition faster.

So the question: how to get clients for your business?
The answer: be good at what you but be a better marketer that the competition.

Questions To Building Your Business Fast

Are You Asking The Right Questions

Le me ask you a question? How good are you at finding and asking the right questions about your business?  Do you take time to even think about your business, its performance and what is causing the issues, or what opportunities are you missing?

If you don’t then your business is nowhere near as profitable as it could be.

The Right Questions

Each week, on Monday, I sit down and review the performance over the last week.  Traffic, sales, conversion: I do this each Monday because I then get to ask the right questions about my business, I also get to see where the issues are, where my system is falling short.

Breaking down your business helps you ask the right questions about different parts of your business: where was the best converting traffic from, what caused that spike in conversion,why is that squeeze page conversion less than last week? and so on.

Knowing these figures and challenging them is the ONLY way to build a business online that gives you what you want…a cash cranking machine that makes money when you sleep…

Getting Organised

This week then take some to get organised: get all the information together that you need, squeeze pages, sales pages, analytics from each, email conversion information and so on.

Spend this week getting organised, create each area into its own PROFIT CENTRE  and deal with each on its own..that way you not get confused.   Treat each area as an way to increase your profits incrementally, each areas improvement increasing your profits piece by piece.

To keep track of each aspect of my business I use a book:

Traffic Generation Book
Here I log down everything I do will lead generation and traffic, log everything that I do each day.  I then add it to my online ‘brain’ to keep a track of what to do next..

Conversion Tracking Book
Here I log down each part of my business that needs conversion and list everything that I in the area of conversion rates. I will log each squeeze page and sales page url, the conversion rates from each and where the traffic comes from.

Doing these books, allows me to create a picture and make a log of what I am doing each day, what worked and what did not, giving me an easy way to see how my business is doing.

I then use THEBRAIN to mind map and list each aspect of the business.  THE BRAIN is free and is great for complex ideas and business building.  I would suggest you get your copy (FREE) and then start using it to organise your thoughts and planning.

Good luck with that, I can appreciate that with busy lives and ever more complex ideas keeping track is hard so I recommend you reduce the information you have in your business to the minimum and get familiar with it every day.. if you have not set up your Google Analytics account then go there asap and get started.

I you want to overcome prospect objections easily, objections to buying, or signing up, or taking some action, you have to know a few things first.  It is true to say that overcoming objections is one of the fundamental skills in marketing and so needs exploring and mastering.

Unless you are able to do this, your ability to sell anything will be greatly diminished and so based on my 14 years online and over 400 sites built, here is some great advice.

Market research, knowing your customer, is one of the ways to overcome prospect objections. Knowing what your prospects want, who they are, their hopes, fears and dreams is essential to being successful in any business, even more so online with the amount of competition you face and the lack of time you have to make any impact.

I do not have time is very common, so think about your service and product, how can it be delivered, accessed or used easily in terms of time.  Think about accessibility,how quick can they get it,how long will it last. 2. How to overcome prospect objections in ‘relationships’
When some people buy they have themselves, their need. in mind alongside what their partner (business or personal) may say. Help your prospects by giving them something to say like ‘buy my course and finally your partner will see that this product is different, that you have turned a corner and begun the next phase of your business’.

3. How to overcome prospect objections in ‘finances’
‘I cannot afford this’ is a common objection that all of us use so find ways to make it ‘affordable’ for the prospect.  This can include payment plans but also great bonuses, added value so they cannot afford to NOT take you up.  Re-visit your irresistible offer and make it even more compelling or add some kind of payment plan for expensive services.

4. How to overcome prospect objections of ‘belief’
To sell something to someone it has to resolve their problem (you find out their problem with your market research) but you must also make them believe that it will help THEM.  Many sites have testimonials from customers, but without market research they will not have the right testimonial.  You must convince your prospect that THEY can achieve the goal, that your solution will help them, and not just everyone else so make sure you get the right testimonials for the right product, the right pictures that convey the right message to those who do not believe in themselves.

5. How to overcome prospect objections of ‘trust’
To buy something your prospect has to trust you: so ask yourself how can this happen, what would make sure your prospects trusted you.  A common phrase people use to NOT buy is ” I did not believe him/her”..what they are saying is this: “I do not see enough proof or feel safe with him/her”. 

Social proof is essential: for example, I have great rankings in my business and use those rankings to prove my expertise in SEO…see an example here.   What can you use to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are an expert?  How about writing some great blog posts pointing out your expertise?

NB: remember that we all have a very good BS detector, so never BS your prospects, they will smell it a mile off!
